There was a time when having a mouse was unusual. It was a costly limitation that only a few professional users could reason. Today you can get a basic mouse for five bucks, and almost every computer system is built around this point that points everywhere.
Right-clicking opens up more options than regular left clicks, but finding out how to click on a laptop is not always easy. This is especially true for laptops that do not have physical buttons under the trackpad, Mac laptops and those with precise designs where nothing is clearly marked. However, learning how to click on a laptop is straightforward, and you can do it using the keyboard if you like.
Most laptops do not have separate physical buttons, but the pad has a click-down section, separated by a vertical dividing line. Left-click on the dividing line with the left and right-clicks to right-click. If there is no dividing line, click chances work the same way. Click the bottom track on the left to right-click and then right-click.
Use the Mouse With the Right Click on the Laptop.
Most computer mice have at least two mouse buttons. When you press left, it is called left-clicking. When you press the right one, it is called a right-click. By default, the left mouse button is a larger mouse button and is used for general functions such as selecting items and double-clicking.
The right mouse button is often used to open content menus, which are pop-up menus that change depending on where you click. For example, if you right-click on the desktop, you can see a menu that includes “Change View Options” and “Change Desktop Background.” If you right-click on a folder, the menu may include options such as “Open” and “Properties.” Some programs, such as video games, can use the right-click to perform other tasks, such as shooting a second weapon at first-person shooters. Most applications, however, use the right-click to open the context menus.
Why Right Click with Keyboard Instead of Mouse?
There are two main reasons for using the graphical interface and keyboard and no mouse. The first is the problem of accessibility. There are many people who lack mobility or ease of use of the mouse, while still having the ability to use the keyboard.
The second is related to hardware failure. Your trackpad or mouse may simply stop working for one reason or another, and you may need to use your computer until you install or repair something. In some cases, using keyboard shortcuts to use your computer may also be faster and more efficient than using a mouse. Professional computer users already know this, because keyboard shortcuts are very important in the flow of work technically.
It may therefore appear that you select some of these keyboard shortcuts to use your mouse. There is nothing wrong with developing a computer control style that fits your needs.
Use Mouse Buttons in Windows 10
Windows 10 offers a feature known as “Mouse Keys”, which is designed to give users control over the mouse cursor keyboard. Launch the Mouse Buttons in Windows 10:
- Click Start.
- Type mouse keys.
- Click the Open or Close Mouse Buttons.
You can also access an advanced set of Mouse Key settings by going to Control Panel> Easy Access Discovery> Easy Access Center> Make Mouse Easy to Use> Set Mouse Buttons.
Once you have activated the Mouse keys, you can move the cursor around using the numeric keypad keys. Now, “/”, “*” and “-” function as mouse buttons, with “-” acting as a valid mouse button. Under the advanced Control Keys Control Panel settings, you can carefully check how the cursor behaves with the right click of the keyboard if you want.
Use Mouse Buttons in MacOS Catalina
It should not be left out; macOS also has an accessibility feature that allows you to use the cursor with the keyboard keys. As you might expect, it doesn’t work exactly the same as the mind-blowing Windows, but it works well. Activation feature:
- Click the Apple menu button.
- Select System Preferences.
- Select Accessibility.
- Now click Identifier Controller.
- Click on other controls.
- Activate Mouse Buttons.
You can use Mouse Keys quickly and easily using Option-Command-F5 or if you have a Mac with a Touch ID button, press three in a row. Since most Magic Keyboards and MacBooks do not have number pads, you can also use these other keyboard layout options to right-click on the keyboard. “I” and Numpad “5” work like mouse clicks here. “M” and “0” will press and hold the key. In any program, a full stop (time) button will release the mouse.
Right-click on MacOS
If you are a Mac user you probably already know that the so-called “one-click” is not set by default. So if you try to right-click on the keyboard without a box on a Mac, well, nothing happens. You need to set the right-click and mouse system Preferences System under mouse and trackpad options. After that, your Magic Trackpad or Mouse will give you a right-click when you click with two fingers (on the trackpad) or on the right (with the Magic Mouse).
By default, however, you need to use the mouse and keyboard to generate the right click. Just hold the control button and click left. Do not confuse it with the “options” button. If you hold that down below, you will still get a menu that appears in most cases, but not the right-click menu. For example, managing options and clicking on the WiFi icon opens advanced WiFi options.
Use the right-click shortcut key.
In Windows, you can select items using the Tab and arrow keys, and then use Enter to activate the compiled object, which probably gives you functionality such as left-clicking or double-clicking on objects. What most people don’t know is that you can also create a keyboard shortcut to right-click. On some Windows keyboards, there is a button that looks like this.
However, most modern keyboards do not have this. Fortunately, Windows has a universal shortcut, Shift + F10, which does the same thing. It will do so with the right-click on any highlighted or when the cursor is in software such as Word or Excel.
Who Needs a Mouse?
OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration. However, if your pointing device stops working or you find the mouse too hard to use, then these keyboard-based workarounds can be very helpful. If you are forced to use something other than a mouse to control the index thanks to a disability, you should consider investing in another type of pointing device.
There are many special controls designed for people with various mobility problems—for example, cameras for eye-tracking or voice control. You can also use a piece of software like Keysticks to use the advanced game controller to control your mouse pointer. While the mouse cursor is still integrated into many desktop applications today, you have many options when it comes to moving that cursor.
Other Pointing Devices
Touchpad or “trackpad” is a flat control device used to move the cursor and perform other tasks on a computer. Touchpads are widely available on laptops and replace mouse functionality. The touchpad is designed to be controlled with your finger. By moving your finger to the face, you can move the cursor to the screen. Like a mouse, touchpads can detect speed and precise movement. This allows you to take control of the slow-motion and quickly move the cursor on the screen using fast movement.
Some touchpads have two buttons below them, corresponding to the left and right mouse buttons respectively. For modern laptops, buttons can be hidden in the lower part of the touchpad. This allows for a large touchpad area, but you can press the lower-left or bottom right of the touchpad to press buttons.
Touchpads can also include a lot of touch technology, common to touch screen devices. This means you can use multiple fingers to perform various actions on your computer. For example, some programs allow you to use two fingers to press and zoom in or out in a document or image. You may also be able to rotate two fingers on the touchpad to rotate the image left or right. Some programs allow you to swipe left or right to revert to a web browser or jump to another page for text.
“NOTE: There is no difference between “touchpad” and “trackpad,” so both terms can be used simultaneously. However, “touchpad” is often associated with Windows computers while “trackpad” describes touch controls built into Macs and Apple-branded peripheral devices.”
Although it can often be used as a left-handed button, the right-hand button at the bottom of the touchpad on your laptop helps to open menus, store items and make file name changes. If the operation of this button suddenly disappears, it may be for physical or electrical reasons.
Why Right-Click of Laptop Not Working?
Old or Damaged Driver
Your laptop needs the right drivers for your touchpad to work. If these drivers are outdated or damaged, your touchpad and keys may not work properly. The entire pad can stop working, or only one-third of these three can be affected.
Windows usually update these drives during its automatic update, but the files may be corrupted or improperly installed.
Update the touchpad driver using Windows Update, or download the latest version directly from the website that produces the laptop or touchpad. Download the latest driver for your operating system and save it to your computer.
Open the Control Panel and select Hardware and Sound, then click Devices and Printers. Select Device Manager and get a touchpad menu. Click and hold the device name or icon to select Update Driver Software, which will open a wizard that will take you through every installation, step by step. Once everything is installed, restart to make sure changes are accepted.
Dirty or Wear Button
Due to the placement of the touchpad, it is possible that the button is simply dirty and sticky. Oil, dirt and other residues from your hands and wrists can transfer to a button as you use your laptop, slide down the edges and make it stick. Age of use can also cause the button or sub-contract to wear, which means it will not register the click properly.
In this case, the only way to fix it is to disassemble your laptop and thoroughly clean the bottom and sides of the touchpad keys and visualize the connections that are under them. This can be tricky, so it may be best left to an experienced professional.
The most obvious function of the idle touchpad button is to use an external mouse instead. Available in a variety of sizes and designs, and using USB or wireless connectors, you may find the one you like to carry with your laptop. Alternatively, you can change the functionality of the keypad and touchpad to work with the right right-click by tapping under the Control Panel and opening the Mouse Properties window. Make changes as needed to find the configuration that works for you.
